There are several different kinds of bees. Very few bees in the United Kingdom are dangerous, however some can cause a nuisance if they nest near to doors or windows. While bees aren’t protected, they are endangered. Bees are a critical element of the local ecosystem and so should not be relocated or eliminated unless it is completely necessary.
Bees almost never present a significant risk. However, they can swarm or nest which behaviour can be disruptive, especially when they nest in a roof or wall cavity. The best course of action is commonly to simply leave the nest alone, as bees do not have a long life cycle. At the point where nests are the most visible, it is generally because the bees are getting prepared to move on.
If you have a swarm or nest of bees that you need to get moved, it’s best to contact a beekeeper who’ll be able to come and safely gather the bees. They may remove them to their own site, or be able to move the nest to a local area that is less disruptive. The British Beekeepers Association are a charitable organisation that establish standards for qualified beekeepers.
