Fumigation is an approach used to handle severe pest infestations. It can be disruptive to homes and businesses so is commonly only used as a final resort where an infestation is very persistent and other ways of control have been ineffective. Fumigation is effective at managing a variety of pests, it is generally used for fleas, cockroaches and other crawling or flying insects.

There is a range of chemicals designed for fumigation, and a range of methods used for spraying. In recent years, quite a few fumigation chemicals have been banned because of the high risk of causing pollution to the atmosphere. The sort of chemical type and method used will depend on the species of pest and the scale of the infestation, combined with the access restrictions to the fumigated area.

There are DIY fumigation options available such as insecticide ‘bombs’. These can be successful for small infestations, but for large or persistent pest infestations a specialist pest control company will be best placed to survey the problem and carry out the fumigation. Fumigation can be dangerous as it involves releasing large amounts of toxic gas into a contained area and so should only be performed by trained specialists.
